In 1803, Congress approved funding to explore the Missouri and
Columbia rivers to learn more about western geography, animals,
plants, and to research indigenous Indian tribes. By 1804/05 the
Lewis and Clark expedition reached Montana and they liked it so much
they considered staying here. Actually, we don't really know that to
be true, but we can't imagine anyone seeing Montana and not wanting to
stay. They did sleep here, however!
What drives men like Lewis and Clark?
When your first name is Meriwether, life can be tough on a
boy. You can spend your life trying to do great things, or you
can head out into the wilderness to escape memories of playground
harassment. However, history tells us that Meriwether and
William's quest to blaze the Northwest passage was a monumental
achievement that helped galvanize the country and awakened the spirit
of Westward expansion.
In a little less than two and one half years, the Lewis and Clark
expedition traveled more than 8000 miles (round trip). When it
was over, Clark estimated they have trekked 4,162 miles on their
journey to the Pacific, and believe it or not, he was within 40 miles
of the true distance.
Wild game provided ample food and in a typical day, each man ate as
much as nine pounds of meat. On one such hunting excursion,
Lewis was shot unintentionally by a myopic member of the crew.
Oh... he was shot in North Dakota, north of his knees and south of his belt (in the
buttocks).
