The History Of Gift Baskets

The custom of sending gift baskets to friends and acquaintances is not a new practice.  Since recorded history began, baskets filled with produce and gifts (and even people) have played an important part in our socio-economic development.

In days gone by, baskets provided a means to carry a variety of goods... even people. The first chariots were little more than baskets on wheels.  Moses was placed in a rattan basket and sent for his first ride down the Nile, and the Apostle Paul was lowered in a basket out of Damascus (was this the first elevator).

Fast forward to the 21st. century and baskets are now used as containers to hold delectable goodies. Today, our famous gift baskets arrive crammed full of original Montana creations. Mouthwatering delights sure to please anyone on your gift list.  Enjoy our tongue-in-cheek romp through history as we offer stories and quotes from famous people...

Voltaire's Gift Basket experiences
Francois Marie Arouet (Voltaire) was born on November 21, 1694 in Paris. Voltaire's intellect, wit and manner made him one of France's greatest writers and philosophers. He was also a very kind and generous man and was famous for sending gift baskets to all his friends

"Those who can make you believe that giving anything but a gift basket is acceptable, can make you commit other social atrocities."

 —Voltaire

Ben Franklin loved sending gift baskets!

Ben Franklin was born January 17, 1706.  At age 17 he leaves his family, running away to Philadelphia to begin an apprenticeship as a printer.  He published his famous Poor Richard's Almanack in 1732.  A man of many accomplishments, but his least known adage on social niceties is:

"It is far better to give a gift basket than receive one".

 —Benjamin Franklin

Vincent van Gogh sent all his friends gift baskets. Vincent van Gogh was a famous painter (though we're not sure why).  His turbulent life climaxed when in 1888 Vince experiences a psychotic flare-up in which he threatened a fellow with a razor, and then cut off a piece of his own left ear.

"I have a terrible need of -- dare I say the word? -- religion.  Then I go out at night to paint the stars, and send everyone I know a gift basket."

 —Vincent van Gogh

Albert Einstein solved the mystery of gift giving - what matters most!

Albert Einstein, the most famous scientist of the century is best known for his formula , yet most people don't really understand what it means.

"Creativity is more important than intelligence".  Sending a gift basket is both creative and intelligent."

 —Albert Einstein

President Bush has not yet created a word to describe gift baskets.

"I've coined new words, like, misunderstanding and Hispanically.  But I couldn't imagine a new word to describe how much I love getting a gift basket".

 —George W. Bush
